HAMPTON - Music by JuJu, Gator Almond and TFC will headline the 18th annual Afrikan American Festival later this month in downtown Hampton.

The Peninsula Association for Sickle Cell Anemia and the City of Hampton are hosting the event June 27-29 at Mill Point Park, 100 Eaton St. Admission is a $3 donation and proceeds support the association.

The festival has themes for different days. Youth night is from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, June 27. The theme Saturday is jazz, reggae, top 40 and old school from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Gospel Fest is from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The event will feature live music, original black art, artifacts, homemade crafts, clothing and food. More than 70 vendors are scheduled for the event. Regional food vendors will be selling chicken wings, barbecue sandwiches, fish sandwiches, jerk and curry chicken, lamb and beef gyros, Italian and rope sausage, fresh cut French fries, sunrise fruit and sweet potato pies.

The Peninsula Association for Sickle Cell Anemia was formed in 1972. The disease affects mainly blacks, but also occurs in Greeks, Italians, Arabs, Sicilians and Turks.
